Tron Legacy Coming as a 3D BD / BD / DVD / DC Package - Wow!

Just as a follow up for my recent post about Tron Legacy, they have finally announced the DVD / BD release for April 5th (I think).

I've been curious as to how this big Hollywood release was going to be packaged, and the great minds at Disney's media sales division have not disappointed us - at least in their creativity for taking our money.

It looks like we will have 5 choices:

Tron Legacy DVD - $29.99 MSRP

Tron: Legacy (Two-Disc BD Blu-ray/DVD Combo) - $39.99 MSRP

Tron: Legacy (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) - $49.99 MSRP

Tron: Legacy (Five-Disc Combo Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy + Tron: The Original Classic Special Edition Blu-ray) - $79.99 MSRP

Tron: Legacy Limited Edition (Five-Disc Combo Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy + Tron: The Original Classic Special Edition Blu-ray) - $99.99 MSRP

Wow. And some fans complain that Anime releases are too expensive?! OK, let's see - regular DVD @ $30 bucks, then the lowest price economy BD/DVD option @ $40 MSRP. Then we have a 4 disk pack that includes every conceivable version someone might need @ $50 bucks MSRP. The next step adds in a very desirable BD version of the original Tron movie - but @ $80 bucks MSRP (about the same price as buying it seperately), and then finally we can choose the glorious 'Limited Edition' version in special packaging for $100 bucks MSRP.

OK, they've already fleeced $34 out of us to see it in 3D at the theater, and another $8 for the excellent Daft Punk soundtrack. So am I going to pay up again and buy it on BluRay? Of course I am. Now must... resist... buying... 3D TV set... ugggggg!

Yeah but Amazon significantly reduced the price. The most expensive is now "only" $69.99. Ooooooh!

I'm not sure what I think about all these different versions. They do give you a wide range of choice, which is nice. On the other hand, I'm not sure we need *that* much choice. xD

Just like we do with Anime releases. What happens with these big movie releases is that they set the MSRP artificially high so that the 'discounted' price in retail actually hits around where their 'target' revenue price is. In other words, $17-$18 is REALLY about the target street price for that version, and $35 for the 4 disk combo pack, etc etc. These days MSRP is just a tool for studios to allow their big retailer partners to make the appearance of a good discount. $70 is still quite expensive for the 'LE', but is made more palatable in the minds of buys because they are getting a '30% discount'. Often when the discounts are really deep, they are being subsidized by the studio itself in the form of MDF or other funding kick backs directly to the retailer.

The 3D push just isn't selling me to date.

I saw Resident Evil in 3D. It was good, but I'll be just as pleased to purchase that in regular D someday.

Tron is of little to no interest to me. I think your purchase of the Daft Punk soundtrack is the thing that would sell me most. Maybe they sshould have packaged the soundtrack with the DVD. : )

If Neon Genesis Evangelion comes out in 3D let me know. : )

Me either, because I don't like wearing the glasses. But I love the whole Tron franchise.

I don't know about Eva, but Gonzo just hinted that they may incorporate some 3D elements into their new production of Last Exile. That might just have enough CG in it to matter, but for most Anime productions the benefits of adding 3D elements to a 2D native art form are questionable at best - except possibly the '3D' stamp on the outside of package.

Go Packers! Too many commercials though!

Oh I agree Robert and I'm half kidding. I don't expect to see any 3D anime and to be honest, in all seriousness, that's one of things I love about 2D animation, whether hand drawn or 2D digital [though I prefer hand drawn]. I really don't need 3D and I'm just as pleased to see Last Exile in 2D.

I'd be interested, but honestly, 3D really doesn't add that much more to the experience. Avatar was very good in theatres. RE4 was a close second because both directors filmed it the right way, but still I don't really care.

That Last Exile does have me partially intrigued because the original Last Exile, along with Blue Submarine No. 6, remains one of the few I enjoyed by Gonzo.

I expected bigger things from them given they partially splintered from Gainax.

Anyway, I always love the conversations here at Robert's Anime Corner. Thanks.

Packers beginning to slip.... interesting.
