A Novel Approach...

CNN reports:

'Investigators in Colorado say they have broken up a massive methamphetamine ring in the Denver area that distributed pounds of the dangerous drug every week and laundered the profits using collectible comic books.

While arresting the alleged ringleaders, brothers Aaron and Alfonzo Castro, law enforcement officers seized about 100 boxes of first-edition collectible comic books. Investigators say one title alone is worth $3,500 and the total collection of comics is worth half a million dollars.

"It appeared they were working on a start-up company for high-end comic books," said Don Quick, the district attorney in Adams County near Denver.

Quick said the seized comic books included some first-edition Superman and Batman titles. The fragile, vintage comics were stored in plastic bags for protection.'

Tam says it's probably the "Worst Dope Smuggling Plan. Evar":

"The case was broken open when a detective noticed Jeremy Blascowicz grinding his teeth, constantly tugging at his neck beard, and talking at a high rate of speed for three hours straight about why Secret Wars was, like, a million billion times better than Crisis on Infinite Earths."

At least it wasn't first edition Saint Marie and Harukaze Bitter Bop manga volumes... HEH.

Rozen Maiden Season 1 Out of Print for Awhile

Funi has informed us that they are now out of stock and no longer shipping the first season Rozen Maiden Thin-Pak (GN-08440). It will not be repressed, so the sets are now limited to the stock we have left on hand. Just a note, because if you have it on backorder with someone else, like someone who was offering it a week ago for a really low price but didn't have any in stock, you're unlikely to ever get that order filled.

I made an inquiry to Funi about the future status of the series, and they told me that the box will be re-released either late this year or early next year (probably as a Viridian label), but the time and date has not yet been decided.

So while it will be coming back in the near future, it may or may not be available over holiday season this year. Something to think about if you were planning on giving either the first season or Traumend as gift this year. :-)

1st Bleach Movie Airing on CN's Adult Swim on Sept 5th

Cartoon Network will run the Bleach: Memories of Nobody film on their Adult Swim block on September 5. The movie centers on the Soul Reapers (Shinigami) who protect humans from the "Hollow" spirits that prey on them.

A mysterious female shinigami called Senna has appeared before Ichigo along with a man named Ganryu, leading a group called the "Dark Ones".

TMP Anime Decides to Pack It Up

Twin Moons Anime (TMP) has decided to pack it up and exit the business for now. Tamim (the owner) cites the terrible economy on his blog:
"I know that many of you have noticed that the Twin Moons Anime web site hasn’t been updated in some time and have been wondering whether we’re still in business. Well, the sad truth is that I’m currently in the process of slowly closing down the store due to the horrible economy.

Twin Moons Anime has always been a labor of love for me and never my full-time job due to the fact that it was barely making any money. It was just doing enough to pay for my own collecting addiction. Unfortunately when the economy fully went south last year, I really felt the hit with the store. Sales just started plummeting and I was forced to focus more on my consulting business to pay my bills. It was becoming very obvious that I simply couldn’t run the store with the level of service that I would like to provide to my customers.

I want to thank each and every one you who have supported me over the years. It has been an absolute pleasure serving you guys and I’m so very glad to have met some of you in person. I really hope that we will be keeping in touch."
Tamim focused mostly on the figure and toy side of the business, and he did a lot of business on the convention circuit (which is expensive, extremely time consuming, and not 'necessarily' very profitable). Even though we were competitors per say, I always liked and admired him and his business and felt like he ran a class 'A' shop (unlike so many others out there). Him and I had talked a little bit via back in May about the Anime economy, the future of the R1 industry, and such and he had told me then that he was planning to close up the shop after Anime Expo . I probably understand better than most the effort and sacrifice required to carve out a living in this industry, and I can say that Tamim will be missed, especially as RACS soldiers on.

I wish you the best of luck my friend. Take care, and keep up the faith. :-)

Monster Coming in October - But Only on TV for Now...

The Monster anime series will begin airing on Syfy’s (formerly SciFi) Ani-Monday block on October 12th. Each episode will be re-broadcast the week after on Chiller (Syfy’s sister channel).

The TV license belongs to Manga Entertainment, which in turn belongs to Starz Media, which in turn belongs to Sony (it's a rich tapestry), but Viz has the home video rights, so as far as a DVD release for the series is concerned? Nothing concrete for now. There was a prior announcement that it will be out in December, but it's not currently showing up on any of my sheets. Setup the TiVO for now.

The Monster manga by Naoki Urasawa is available here.

(Oh, and Macross Plus will be airing on October 26th. Now you can't go wrong there!)

Synopsis: Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, had it all: incredible skill at his work, a rich and beautiful fiancee, and a promising career at his hospital. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result he lost the support of the hospital director, as well as his position in the hospital and his fiance. A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and once again he was catapulted back onto the top. But as the chief suspect of the murders, Tenma did not get a easy life. As a matter of fact, it seems that the boy he saved was much more than he had appeared to be... Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.

Mahoromatic: Tadaima Okaeri OVA Announced (In Japan)

A two part Mahoromatic television special edition has been scheduled to premiere on the BS-TBS satellite and cable channel on October 17 and 24 in Japan with the official title Mahoromatic: Tadaima Okaeri.

ANN reports that Shouji Saeki is returning from the Mahoromatic: Summer Special to direct this new work at the Gainax anime studio, and Kazuhiro Takamura is returning from every previous Mahoromatic anime project to design the characters and oversee the animation production. Also reprising their roles are most of the cast members and the musical composer Toshio Masuda. Tatsuhiko Urahata is writing the scripts based on Bow Ditama and Bunjuro Nakayama's original Mahoromatic manga.

Now the question is, if and when we will get this over here in the US? I haven't a clue at this time, but with the DVD and BluRay scheduled for release in Japan in late December, it wouldn't be earlier than maybe next summer. The official Japanese website for the new production has been posted here.

More 'multi-purpose' combat maids are always welcome here...

Another Lady Innocent

Steven Den Beste has recently discovered just how beautiful the art is in the 'H' title Another Lady Innocent:

"Urushihara Satoshi's drawing style is unmistakable. No one draws gorgeous women better than him"

"The art and animation in this are fantastic. It looks better than any broadcast show. I swear, it must have had a huge budget, which is really rare when it comes to hentai. I can only assume that Urushihara's reputation was the reason the production company was willing to put so much money into it."
Steven has lots of nice frame grabs over on his blog (NSFW warning). It's actually a 'nice' H title too, one of those rare ones that you and Mrs. can actually 'safely' watch together. :-) Don't expect much from the plot (it's really a 40 minute short exhibition of fine art rather than any sort of coherent story line), but if you are a fan of Urushihara's art work and have let this titles slip under your radar for the last few years, you should really think about picking up a copy.

I think we should look back into bringing some of Urushihara's art collections back into stock if possible. In the past, they have always sold out almost as fast as we could get them in, but we do currently have one still in stock here for those of you who would like to sample his other works.

Got In On the 'Clunkers' Deal Just In Time

We had an old 95 Chevy Tahoe that I've owned for 14 years that we used as a company work vehicle, mostly for our mail pickups. It had 109,000 miles, and while it started and ran great, almost nothing else still worked. Electric seats - dead, A/C - dead, 4WD - dead. Not fun to drive in the summer heat, but none of these problems were fixable unless we wanted to spend more than the truck was worth (which I figure was maybe $500). It would have needed brakes and tires soon, it cost a lot to insure, and it got really shitty gas mileage (like 13mpg) which is why it was relegated to nothing but short trips. We've been knocking around the idea of getting a new 'company vehicle', something that is a lot smaller and has a better carbon footprint, and the cash for clunkers program created an irresistible opportunity, so Thursday evening we took the old Tahoe to Dulles Kia and traded it in for this:

It's a 2010 Kia Soul Special Edition Denim color with the 2.0 engine and the white racing stripe. It gets 30mpg, has a sunroof, A/C, Auto, fog lights, 18" Wheels, a spoiler (for what I have no idea), the upgraded sound system, a fairly big cargo compartment (for such a small car) and comes with 4 punk hamsters to drive it around. After the $4,500 clunkers trade in credit, the total cost of this vehicle out the door INCLUDING all fees, taxes, and tags was $14,835. I don't think we could have done any better than that.

We're thinking about turning it into an Itashi. :-)

By the way, the clunkers program will end on Monday.

Helping a Fellow Figure Collector

A fellow Anime fan Keith and I have been talking a bit over the last few days, and he has a problem we have not been able to help him with, so I asked him to send me a blurb that I could post here in case anyone out there might be able to help him out.

From Keith:

"About 7 weeks ago the unimaginable happened to my 14 year old nephew and his mother (my sister). They had gone to the movies and dinner like they routinely did every Saturday but when they came home they were greeted by an unpleasant surprise. Evidently while they were out their home caught fire destroying a good part of their house and way of life. Luis lost the majority of his anime figurine collection along with wall scrolls and many other items from his beloved collection. His DVD collection was spared along with a couple of his figures but more importantly he lost several key items in his collection that I am finding near impossible to replace. The main one in particular was his Ryoko Asakura Bunny by FREEing. It was the pride and joy of his collection and now it is gone. My new mission is to try and replace it for him before his birthday which is in the last part of September. Anime is this boy's life and his escape and he has managed to inspire me to collect and adore anime as well. Without having a father figure present I took it upon myself to try and fill that void as his uncle. What I am asking for is some help locating this figure for a reasonable price. I have managed to replace the majority of his collection with the exception of Ryoko and his Lelouch Figma figures but it was Ryoko that was/is his favorite. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for listening and God bless."

Keith works for the Winston-Salem Police Department in NC and is a great guy. If you can help him help and his nephew, or know anyone who might be able to, please contact him directly via e-mail. The figure he is looking for is pictured below, JAN code 4571245290182.

Funimation sent over a surprise notice right before our close of business on Friday that, effective August 14th, they have reduced the MSRP on the Full Metal Panic 2nd RAID BluRay DVD Box from $99.98 to $69.98. First Code Geass R2 Bundle is Seven Episodes - Not Nine

Just a quick post to confirm what everyone has been asking all day via e-mail. The first Code Geass R2 bundle is indeed 7 episodes and 175 Minutes, not 9 episodes and 225 minutes as it was originally solicited. They totally slipped this past us under the radar, so I apologize that we did not have the correct stats and episode counts listed on the site until last night.

In response to this discrepancy, Bandai says that the DVD info included in the original solicitation mailer sent out to retailers was incorrect. R2 is going to be released as four parts (probably 7 ,6 ,6, and 6 eps) , not three (9, 8, and 8 eps) as was originally planned. The first DVD bundle contains seven episodes, and the subsequent parts will have six episodes each. Bandai does, however, "apologize for the initial information regarding Part 1 being incorrect in the mailer”, and did make it clear that their solicitation mailers state 'all specifications are subject to change without notice'.

And so they did. They do love surprises over there. :-)

Update: I'd also like to note that the most recent mailer (that Bandai sent us last week) for their October releases indicates that the 2nd Code Geass R2DVD bundle will be 225 minutes (9 eps), however, this is incorrect, it will actually be 6 episodes and 150 minutes.

Bandai's October Releases Posted / More Date Changes

We've just completed posting Bandai's October release schedule onto the store site for pre-order. Bandai will be releasing the following new material in October:

Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 DVD Bundle #2 (DVD #3-4)
Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 DVD Bundle #2 (Limited Edition)

In addition, we will be getting the following re-releases and/or box collections:

My-Otome Complete Collection DVD Boxed Set (Eps #1-26) (Anime Legends)
Toward the Terra Complete Collection DVD Boxed Set (Anime Legends)
Vision of Escaflowne Complete Collection DVD Boxed Set (Re-Release) (Super Legends)

Please note that the new 'Super Legends' label on the Escaflowne TV re-release is being applied because they have already used the 'Anime Legends' label for a previous Escaflowne box.

Finally, and unfortunately, Bandai has also had to reschedule the following releases:

Sola Complete Collection DVD Boxed Set (Eps #1-13 + 2 OVA's) (Anime Legends) - Bumped from Aug 18th to Sep 15th
Vision of Escaflowne, the Movie DVD (BluRay) - Bumped from Sep 1st to Oct 20th
Hayate the Combat Butler DVD Bundle #2 (2 Disks) (Eps #8-14) - Bumped from Sep 1st to Sep 15th

That's it for now, unless of course, they have anymore secret titles they are going to sneak out between now and then. You never know about when these things will come, or who will be allowed to sell them... -_^
