Wish I could share the enthusiasm of some for ADV's new releases but being a fan who prefers Engish dubs, it's not possible.
I would like to see dubs as well for these, however, subs are better than nothing. My hope is that if ADV can get some successful new releases back in the pipeline they may be able to start dubbing again in the near future as the market picks back up.
I have to agree with Robert. ADV/Sentai needs to get a good financial basis under it right now, and sub only releases are a good way to do that. And frankly, Clannad and Ghost Hound will probably sell almost as well sub-only, as with a dub, as they appeal to primarily hardcore fans.
I think it's pretty evident ADV wants to dub these, and Anime Network wants them dubbed for broadcast, but they are playing the game correctly for right now. They are placing profits ahead of what they want to do, which is something they didn't always do in the past. And it seems to be paying off, as we are starting to see more licenses get announced, and I think they have more in the works.
If these titles continue to do well, and allow ADV to build up it's finances, I think we will start to see dubs from them again. And I hope sooner, rather than later. ADV's dubs the past few years were the best, and I really miss them.
It is nice to see some positive developments in the past few months for not only ADV, but the industry as a whole. Maybe we are hitting bottom...
I wish I shared your optimism but after watching them and reading their statements, I believe what was ADV is currently in the process of is a full re-brand with the intent of remaining sub-only from here on out.
Bandai appears to intend to do something similar, with only shows that get TV deals getting English dubs.
Considering which companies are doing the best right now and which are doing the worst, I don't think sub-only is the panacea they make it out to be. Rather, what is needed are shifts in internal management to remove bad decision makers from the equation.
Also you can't achieve success with low selling ultra-niche titles. A company must be able to expand it's consumer base and increase sales, not cut out potential consumers and decrease sales. Even if the profit per unit is higher, if the company is still making costly mistakes and has fewer customers, then success is not likely.
Success is achieved by broad and diverse libraries of titles that can be sold to a large precentage of consumers. Exactly what Funimation has.
Just my personal opinions. Not that I know anything, I'm just a consumer who used to buy anime from ADV all the time and fairly often from Bandai. No reason to worry about losing my money right?
How could (without committing even more fraud and ripping even more of the Japanese off) ADV/Sentai pick up their market?
In fact, how can anime pick up their market in a time where the fandom wants it all for free and on their own terms?
Ah, CLANNAD -After Story- in October! I've been waiting for this one as well.
