Monster Coming in October - But Only on TV for Now...

The Monster anime series will begin airing on Syfy’s (formerly SciFi) Ani-Monday block on October 12th. Each episode will be re-broadcast the week after on Chiller (Syfy’s sister channel).

The TV license belongs to Manga Entertainment, which in turn belongs to Starz Media, which in turn belongs to Sony (it's a rich tapestry), but Viz has the home video rights, so as far as a DVD release for the series is concerned? Nothing concrete for now. There was a prior announcement that it will be out in December, but it's not currently showing up on any of my sheets. Setup the TiVO for now.

The Monster manga by Naoki Urasawa is available here.

(Oh, and Macross Plus will be airing on October 26th. Now you can't go wrong there!)

Synopsis: Kenzou Tenma, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, had it all: incredible skill at his work, a rich and beautiful fiancee, and a promising career at his hospital. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result he lost the support of the hospital director, as well as his position in the hospital and his fiance. A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and once again he was catapulted back onto the top. But as the chief suspect of the murders, Tenma did not get a easy life. As a matter of fact, it seems that the boy he saved was much more than he had appeared to be... Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.

Damn, and Monster is one I'm jumping at the bit to get on R1 DVD, and I don't have cable! Might have to go to someone's house to check out a few episodes one night.

I do hope it's successful, at least successful enough to release to DVD.

Viz announced the license for Monster sometime last year IIRC. They made a deal with Manga to air it on their block on Syfy.

Funimation had announced back in April that it was supposed to air on their channel too but that's probably not happening now with it airing on Syfy.

Viz are going to release the first dvd box set, episodes 1-15, December 1st. http://www.aaaanime.com/item/DVDs/1000113147.html

Yep, you're correct, Viz will be releasing it on DVD. The item listing on AAA's site, however, is from an old solicitation that is no longer valid. My current release schedule from Viz goes up through the middle of December and does not list the Monster DVD release. I'll shoot and e-mail to Viz's video rep and see if he can comment on the DVD release plans.
