Update on the Completion of Red Garden, Pumpkin Scissors, and NHK

After deciding to re-release Red Garden, Pumpkin Scissors , and Welcome to the NHK strictly as boxed sets, and leaving customers who previously bought some of the initial volumes released by ADV with no choice except to rebuy the series, Funimation seems to be back peddling and may in fact offer Red Garden vol. 4-6, Pumpkin Scissors vol. 5-6, Welcome to the NHK vol. 5-6 individually. We have passed on every comment and complaint sent in to us by you directly to Funi management, and it appears they are listening.

We've been talking to them regarding this since Wednesday, and I know some news has already slipped out (which is the only reason I'm posting on it at this stage), but right now nothing is firm (there are no exclusive deals set in stone either, despite what's been printed on blogs and forums). I'm hoping we should get a decision on this tomorrow (Monday). It's my hope we will indeed be able to offer the missing single volumes to collectors who need them to finish their initial purchases and complete their boxed sets.

Stay tuned.

This has nothing to do with the actual post here, but I have a question. Do you know if GunXSword is ever going to come out as a Boxset? I've been keeping an eye out for any info on it but I haven't heard anything...

It's not one of the licenses Funi picked up in their original basket of Geneon titles, so it will be up to someone to license it and re-release it. Funi has been very successful feeding at Geneon trough during Q3, and I expect them to go back for more next year.

ADV is also trying to wet their beak and just licensed Mahoromatic from Geneon's former licensing partner (so claims John Ledford), and will try to re-release it in January or February - assuming they can stay in business until then. The word among retailers as of a few weeks ago (after Ike) was that exit Visa's were imminent down in Houston, but to their credit they are just about at zero now, so almost anything they do outside of re-packaging titles everyone already has is a net positive. In respects to Gun X I think that title is more along the type of Anime Funi likes to release.

Hello, Robert!

Did you get any news on the possibility of individual releases of "Welcome to the NHK!" Vol.5 & Vol.6 from Funimation? I'm wondering whether i should throw out ADV's box that was bundled with Vol.2 or not ;)

We've been working on it, but Funimation only wants to press a limited number of the final NHK DVD's, and wants retailers to commit in blocks of 500 each non-returnable. With so many people telling us they are just going to replace what they have with the new boxes, I'm skeptical that we could sell that many of the final singles and I don't really want us to end up with a couple hundred unsold DVD's after Christmas we have to liquidate way below cost, so right now we're not planning to pick them up unless we can work out return privileges or get Funi to commit to a smaller run. It's still up in the air. So far the Pumpkin Scissors boxes that just came in have been selling like crazy (mostly in pairs), and I want to see where that goes before we commit to anything. Just trying to run a responsible business. :-)

Thanks for your reply, Robert! I'm not sure if i'll succeed in jamming the NHK Part II thin-pack into the space left in the box for those two final volumes, so maybe i'll find the use for it as it was planned originally by ADV after all... :S I'll stay tuned then, in case you come to terms with FUNi.

Regards,
Andy

I've probably had this discussion privately with over 200 people so far, and most folks are telling me they just plan to re-buy the boxed sets. We've responded to that by marking the first box for both Pumpkin Scissors and Welcome to NHK down to close to 40% off as our regular price. This prices the two boxed sets together at about $82 down from the MSRP of $120, and will make them as affordable as possible to people not wanting to wait and complete the singles. If most people do rebuy the boxed sets as they are saying, carrying the singles will become a moot point anyway, and we can then look to special order a few copies for the customers that absolutely want to complete their boxed sets.
